In-ground concrete effluent sumps are a popular storage choice in many situations. When choosing a sump we look for a ‘set and forget’ situation, where you can be confident your effluent sump will be trouble free for years to come.
For greater strength and durability, we recommend concrete effluent sumps constructed using a pre-cast concrete moulding process so you end up with just one piece - no potentially weak, leaky joints, and a more durable material than plaster or plastic.
A sump can be placed between a cow shed and a storage facility, normally about 20 metres away from the cow shed and would lead to a concrete sump of 20,000 litres or more. From that sump, there can be two pumps put in to transfer effluent to the storage facility and for irrigation.
Bladder tanks work well with a sump system and can offer fail-safe efficiency with two pumps. The two pumps include a transfer pump (often a Submersible Pump) that is dedicated to just pumping to a bladder tank, and a Progressive Cavity Pump for irrigation that can be connected to the irrigation network. When the conditions are favourable, you can turn on the irrigation pump with a float switch. Once the sump is about half full, the irrigation pump will start and pump until the sump is empty.
